I’m a dreamer and I dream big, often letting my mind wander endlessly. But I’ve realized that if I don’t write down my dreams and make actionable smart goals, I put dope ass ideas in the universe for others to take. I have watched it happen far too often. So I am going to tell you how I use Smart Goals and Backwards Planning to plan out my weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly goals to line up with my 3 and 5 year plans with ease.
First thing’s first. Let’s talk about goals. Remember I said I am a dreamer? I can come up with ideas and wishes all day long. But if I don’t create a plan for making them come true, I’ll never start working on them. So I write down all my ideas and turn them into SMART Goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely. Here is an example of how we turn a goal into a SMART Goal. Goal: I want to start blogging. SMART Goal: I will write 4 blog posts a month consistently for 3 months, starting January 4. The original goal was vague and gave you no direction. But the SMART Goal was specified the goal, that gave a time frame, was not too difficult to attain, was relevant and was able to be measured, or more specifically, gave a sense of completion.
After you have created your SMART GOALS, you can begin to use them to plan backwards. Planning backwards is the process of breaking down a large goal into smaller parts to make it achievable. Let’s revisit the blogging goal. You want to blog 4 times a month for 3 months. But you don’t even know where to start. You already have a platform, but you just need to get yourself in gear. You can break the action down into smaller tasks to get you there. Here’s an example of what my rough plan would look like.
Blog Consistently 4 times a month for 3 months Starting Jan 4
Plan Blog Dates - due by 12/17
Plan days to sit down and write multiple posts at a time
January’s 4 posts due 12/28
February’s 4 posts due 1/25
March’s 4 posts due 2/22
Plan consistency and days I want the posts to publish
Every Friday for 3 months
Plan Content - due by 12/19
Brainstorm, then research topics to write about
Create content calendar
Decide if content will be related and find ways to make them connect if so
Find images on hard drive or plan photo shoot to correspond with posts
Create Marketing Plan - due by 12/20
Research where I want to post my blog posts
Research how to add blog posts to larger sites like apple news and other discovery sites
Finish first 4 blogs - due by 12/28
Schedule blog posts to publish
Write up snippets of what I want to share blog post with on social media
Complete photo shoot for images that wasn’t found on hard drive
Evaluate my strategy and decide if this plan worked.
Create Plan for Next 3 - 9 months
Getting it done
I use this method for all my planning. I especially use it to plan out my year. In next week’s post, I will discuss how I plan out 12 months. I’ll also be discussing accountability groups and how we set up out layout to achieve our goals. Until then, I’d love to hear from you. Tell me down in the comments how you plan your goals? Do you use this method or something similar? Or do you do something completely different. Let a sista know will ya?
